Dirty WHOers Podcast - Episode 3

More of the same old tosh. Now safe with pets and household fabrics, may contain nuts and added Scotsman.

Fuschia forces us to listen to another Big Finish, and we froth on about our favorite Who companions (not the best companions, big difference) and why they're there in the first place. A nod to the boys at Podshock and a plug for their party this week (in Second Life). The usual tipsy self indulgent malarky.

Let us know in the comments bit below if you like the episode, want to send us hate mail, need to spam somewhere with your cheap meds franchise, or want us to review something in particular (we take requests and bribes). Better still, especially if you work for the BBC, Character Options, or Big Finish, send us free Who tat and we'll give it the once over. Make the most of this one, life's gonna be busy for us for a while so the next episode'll be a few weeks away.

This is one of the LOST DirtyWHOers Episodes, no longer available for streaming from iTunes etc., but is available for download from our Dropbox archive HERE.

Did you spell "Shada" wrong on purpose? Or did you just have one of your usual dyslexia spelling moments? ;-)

Dear Dirty Whoers,

I am after some advice for the Doctor Who novice. While I am rediscovering my enjoyment of DW I have recently discovered that DW was not aired in Canada (or at least not where the good lady wife grew up). Her first exposure to DW was the Doctorin' the Tardis song and had had virtually no exposure to Who prior to SL.

So before I drag her into living in a house with no "front door" or having to build sky above your trees, I wondered if you could recommend or compile a "Doctor Who for Dummies" guide?

I'm not going to spring Gallifreyan Houses on her or anything but wondered if you had thoughts on enabling someone to "get it".

Personally, Sir Edward, I'd go for the best of the modern stuff. Get her to watch "The Empty Child" & "Doctor Dances" (Eccleston; both good high octane adventure whilst being reasonably continuity light; oh yes & Captain Jack...), "Blink" (Tennant & Martha; again, reasonably continuity light but lots of fun time travel and some great dialogue) and, possibly, "School Reunion" (Tennant & Rose; although this does rely more on nostalgia but again has some cracking lines and Giles from Buffy).

The Prof suggests "Human Nature" & "Family of Blood" (Tennant & Martha; both excellent, slightly more tied to continuity but starts to bring in some of the Time Lordy stuff) and once you've worked through those, I'd say maybe "Utopia" which also brings in some Time Lord stuffage before spoiling it all with John Simm gurning like a mad-man. Just don't watch the following two episodes, 'cos they're pants.

Personally, after all of that, I'd go for "Partners in Crime" (Tennant & Donna; Agatha Christie shenanigans with titles as dialogue), "Silence in the Library" & "Forests of the Dead" (Tennant & Donna; gosh, most of these are Steven Moffat...)

If she can cope with all of that, then maybe you could move backwards in time to some of the Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee stuff. I love "Brain of Morbius" because its so funny but beautifully done and again you get some more Time Lord history. Oolon, Sen and Terry can recommend some Pertwee stuff as I haven't seen much of that.

I know a lot of the modern stuff did make it to Canada-land as I have friends there who are avid fans, so hopefully she could fins it batting about somewhere on the aether.

Hope that helps!

I agree with Fuschia above. Although I would add the new series pilot Rose to the mix. Since it is told from the perspective of the companion, it serves it's function of drawing in novice viewers very well, imo.

As far as Pertwee, the Daemons is one of my favorites. Spearhead from Space may be good to watch after Rose as well - same enemy.

If your wife is a sci-fi fan, but just doesn't know Who, I think The Impossible Planet is the best science fiction genre story in the New Series to date.

Love the podcast much. Pleeeeeeeeeease make it easier to subscribe for non-iTunes users, though...
